10th Mountain’s Seasonal Hut Intern Program is intended to provide opportunities to learn valuable job skills and maintain the huts to high standards. This program initially began in 1993 and has since provided more than a hundred young people with the opportunity to learn about Colorado’s backcountry and 10th Mountain’s system of remote huts.
- Hut Maintenance: The majority of time is spent splitting and stacking firewood, cleaning, restocking, and minor repairs. Overnight stays at the huts will occur and may involve mountain biking or hiking. If you enjoy this type of work in a beautiful remote setting, this program is for you.
- Trail Maintenance: Occasionally hike trails to remove deadfall and replace markers.
- Volunteer Work Sessions: Assist volunteer work sessions at the huts.
- Education: We strive to create a learning environment and teach you about the history of the 10th Mountain Division troops, the history of the hut system, and the ecology of the hut environs. Informally we hope to expose you to first-aid in a wilderness setting, map and compass skills, and backcountry safety.
- Workshops/Special Events: May be involved in logistical support for 10th Mountain-sponsored workshops or events.
- Reservations/Administration: Schedules permitting, observe and assist reservations, membership, and other administrative functions.
Work Hours and Environment, Physical Requirements, and Additional Information:
- Position Type and Work Hours: Seasonal full-time typically beginning mid-June and ending mid-August. These dates may change due to spring-time travel conditions, scopes of work, or other reasons. Some opportunities may be available to work later in the fall. Work weeks typically consist of 40 hours with varied days of the week including some weekends and some overtime. Outdoor work entails a variety of different weather and temperature conditions.
- Essential Physical Requirements:
- Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Physical: Constant pushing and or pulling up to 25 lbs, frequent pushing and/or pulling of 50 lbs, and occasional pushing and/or pulling of greater than 100 lbs of equipment, supplies, and material with assistance. Reaching, standing, sitting, crouching, kneeling, seeing, walking, and hearing. This may involve operating a 4WD truck including installing tire chains.

Compensation: Starting wage is $17 per hour. Housing may be available at 10th Mountain’s Leadville and Aspen facilities.
