Spring Hut Trip Opportunities
10th Mountain Huts
May 5, 2026
Spring is here in the Rockies, and while the Winter hut season has officially wound down across many of our huts, there’s still plenty of opportunity for hut trips during these beautiful and quiet Spring months. If you’re looking to add a trip to your calendar for May or June, below is an overview of the huts in our system that are open for all or part of this time:
- Broome Hut
- Continental Divide & Point Breeze Cabins
- High Lonesome Hut
- Polar Star Inn & Seipel Huts
- Note: The USFS closure gate at Yeoman Park is closed until May 21, regardless of conditions, and may remain closed after that date depending on conditions. Once open, upper sections of the road may still be impassable through the end of June.
- Shrine Mountain Inn Huts
- Note: Shrine Pass Road is seasonally closed until June 21st each year, regardless of conditions. Hut visitors will need to hike or bike along the road to reach the huts, and should be prepared for variable conditions.
- Braun & Friends’ Huts – Open through May 31st!
Important Considerations for Spring Hut Travel
While Spring can be an especially great time to get out in the backcountry, there are some important considerations for hut travel during this transitional season:
- Conditions in spring are highly variable! Hutgoers should be prepared to encounter a variety of conditions along the trail, including mud and snow, and should also be prepared for various modes of travel to each hut. For example, while visitors may be able to drive partway into some huts, they must be prepared to finish the route on foot once they hit the seasonal closure gates on applicable hut routes, or reach impassable snow drifts, which can be present on any mountain road this time of year. Packing snowshoes is strongly recommended. Get an early start, and plan for extra time getting in! To discuss expected travel modes and latest route conditions, please call our reservation team: 970-925-5775.
- Weather is also highly variable in the mountains during spring, and conditions can change rapidly. Heavy winds, brisk temperatures and thunderstorms are common occurrences, and can come in quickly – even when the day starts off sunny and warm. Hut visitors should be prepared for inclement weather at any time.
- Water availability is not guaranteed. With this winter’s low snowpack, streams may not be flowing as expected. Hut visitors should plan ahead, and be prepared to carry in water to huts as needed. Be sure to check the Summer Water Sources page for more info specific to each hut, and call our reservation team with questions.
