Park at the Timberline Lake Trailhead at the west end of Turquoise Lake. Pick up the Colorado Trail at the north end of the trailhead parking area. Follow the Colorado Trail as it climbs out of Glacier Creek via an easterly traverse, then climbs N and NE through timber to timberline at 11,400 feet on the south ridge of Galena Mountain. The trail descends through glades from here to 11,200 feet, then takes a more gradual descent for 1/4 mile past the south edge of a small lake. Pass this lake and climb a short hill to pass between the two Galena Lakes. From Galena Lakes follow the Colorado Trail through a flat marshy area and climb for 1/4 mile to 11,240 feet. The trail swings E here through timber to the Bear Lake Trailhead. From the Bear Lake trailhead, you leave the Colorado Trail and head E through scattered trees up a gentle rise for approximately ¼ mile to Uncle Bud’s Hut. There is often a social trail from the Bear Lake trailhead heading E to the hut.
From Hwy 24 and Mountain View Drive on the north end of Leadville, drive 2.8 miles west on Mtn. View Drive to a “T” intersection, turn right and continue on Turquoise Lake Road. This road will wind you around the lake, and past multiple campground areas. Follow this road approximately 10 miles to the far west end of the Lake and turn right into the Timberline Lake Trailhead.
