Route Description

HUT TO HUT distances are usually longer than from trailhead to hut. Use winter specific topographic maps. Routes between huts are not often used so may not be tracked; navigation and breaking trail may be particularly challenging.

Currently there are no blue diamonds or tree blazes on this route (pending permits). The suggested route from Sangree’s Hut to the Emmelyn Hut requires strong navigational and winter travel abilities because much of the route is above treeline and winter storms can cause difficulties. Deviation from the route can have severe consequences. From Sangree’s, ski northwest angling uphill for about 1/3mile to 11,900′, then head west on that contour more or less for 1/2 mile to an evident saddle on the ridge. Climb gradually west to the high point at 12,036. Carefully descend through the timber west/southwest to 11,800 feet then descend northwest on the nose of the ridge to about 11,300 feet, then north to the hut.

Locations of Observed or Reported Avalanche Activity: No avalanche activity has been reported along this suggested route.
