HUT TO HUT distances are usually longer than from trailhead to hut. Use winter specific topographic maps. Routes between huts are not often used so may not be tracked; navigation and breaking trail may be particularly challenging.
Currently there are no blue diamonds or tree blazes on this route (pending permits). From the Emmelyn Hut, travel south angling uphill for about 1/4 mile to about 11,300′ then head southeast up the nose of the ridge. As you get closer to treeline, head more easterly to 12,000′ which is a high point on the ridge. Descend gradually heading east for about 1/2 mile to the saddle on the ridge at 11,880′. Follow this contour about 1/2 mile and work your way down on angle approach to Sangree’s Hut. This route can be a very pleasant and rewarding ski with good weather, good snow and good advance preparation. However, about half of the route is above treeline along a windswept ridge and bad weather or high winds can reduce visibility and make navigation very challenging. Use your map, compass, GPS and travel wisely to increase the odds of arriving at Sangree’s as planned.
