The suggested winter route from the East Tennessee trailhead to the hut is 3.4 miles and 1,143 feet elevation gain. After parking at the designated winter parking area, ski north on the snow-covered County Road 18 for .6 miles, then bear right on FS Road 102, travel about 1 mile, then look for where the trail heads off to the right, leaving FS Road 102. It climbs more steeply through the forest for 1.5 miles, does a hard switchback to the right, then finishes with a winding, steeper .25 mile final push to the hut.

Beginning at the junction of Highways 24 and 91 north of Leadville, drive north on Highway 24 for approximately 3 miles to CR 18 (East Tennessee Road). Take a right on CR 18 and drive 1.2 miles north to the winter closure and signed 10th Mountain Parking.
