Route Description

This road is open to vehicle traffic but is an extreme 4WD road that is periodically closed due to washouts and road damage. It should only be attempted by experienced drivers with the proper vehicle. Motorized vehicles that do drive to the hut must park at the summer closure approximately 1/4 mile from the hut.

From the junction of Hwy 24 and 91 at the N end of Leadville, take Highway 24 north for 7.3 miles. Take a left onto a dirt road (Road #19). At this left turn there is a sign mounted on an antique road-grader for Webster’s Sand and Gravel. Continue on Road #19 until you reach the Wurtz Ditch Road (#705) – take Wurtz Ditch Road (#705) to where it converges with Slide Lake Road (#145). Continue on Slide Lake Road (#145) for about 2.8 miles to the 10th Mountain Division Hut.
