Events and Trips

First aid class at Harry Gates hut.
Wilderness Medicine Institute first aid course at Harrry Gates hut.

Each year, 10th Mountain offers a few special events and trips in the hut system. These trips are annual adventures, full of fun and tradition, and suitable for strong to expert backcountry travelers. The two ski-through events have taken place for years and offer a special opportunity to participate in a highly challenging point-to-point, multi-hut tour. The Benedict Bike 150 is fast becoming a favorite. Each of these trips is meant to highlight the best of the hut system and our mission, by offering a challenging backcountry experience in a unique mountain environment. The names of two of the trips are in honor of 10th Mountain founder, Fritz Benedict, and all trips are meant to recognize his goal of connecting mountain communities with a system of backcountry huts for non-motorized travelers.

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM YOU.  In fairness to yourself, other participants, and us, we ask that you are a competent mountain-biker, with previous mountain biking at altitude, in the Mountains of Colorado.  You should have the ability to ascend and descend on your bike without instruction (we are glad to give tips, but this is not a guided trip).  All participants should be prepared for sun, rain, mud, and/or snow, each day.

You are expected to come to this trip in great biking shape, so spend this summer training, and working on your bike skills.  Being prepared and comfortable to ride 30 miles a day with 4000’ elevation gain is a good goal.  Likewise, when you arrive for the pre-trip tour, your bike should be in top shape and fully tuned, ready to go.  Don’t wait for the pre-trip tour to determine that you bike needs a tune-up.
